FAQ

Is this service free?

Yes, the service is completely free for users.

How long has this service existed?

This service has been available since November 21, 2005.

How do I delete my account?

You can delete your account in your XMPP client. Accounts unused for more than one year are periodically deleted.

I forgot my password. What can I do?

If you have forgotten your password and it is saved in your client, try extracting it from your client’s configuration file. If your password is not saved in your client, there is no way to recover access. The account will be deleted after one year of inactivity.

How do I register an account?

You can create an account via the registration form. Direct registration through an XMPP client is currently not possible, as this was abused for automated mass registrations. The captcha on the registration form ensures that only real people can create an account.

What is XMPP and how does it work?

XMPP (formerly called Jabber) is an open, federated protocol for instant messaging - comparable to email. With an account on draugr.de, you can chat with any XMPP user worldwide, regardless of which server their account is on. You only need their XMPP address. Unlike proprietary messengers, XMPP is not controlled by a single company but operated by a multitude of independent servers.

Can I use multiple devices with my account?

Yes, you can use your XMPP account on multiple devices simultaneously. Modern XMPP clients such as Conversations (Android), Gajim (Windows/Linux), or Monal (iOS) support message synchronization between devices and access to your message history. This keeps your conversations in sync across all devices.

Can I chat with users on other XMPP servers?

Yes. See What is XMPP? for details.

Does the server support end-to-end encryption (OMEMO)?

Yes. OMEMO is recommended for end-to-end encryption and works on the client level. The server simply relays the encrypted messages without being able to read them. OMEMO is supported by many clients, including Conversations (Android), Gajim (Windows/Linux), and Monal (iOS). In most clients, you can enable OMEMO in the settings.

Who operates the service?

Draugr.de is operated by Christian Dröge as a non-commercial service. For questions, you can reach him via email at info@draugr.de.
